What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of prescription medication to safely calm your nerves. In order to provide this service, our office holds a special permit from the state of Virginia and our team has and continues to pursue extensive training in a variety of sedation administration methods. We provide three levels of sedation in our office:

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as laughing gas or sweet air, nitrous oxide is very safe and provides the lightest level of sedation.

Light Sedation

Light sedation involves taking an oral sedative before your visit. If you take any medication before or during your visit, you will need to have an adult provide transportation to and from your appointment. We don’t routinely provide this service for emergency visits because we need to complete necessary paperwork prior to your treatment.

Moderate Sedation

We can combine oral medication with nitrous oxide to achieve moderate sedation. This is the deepest level of sedation we currently provide. When using oral medication and nitrous oxide, you will not be completely asleep like you might at the hospital. You will feel drowsy and separated from the procedure but you are still able to respond to our team.

Are there other options?

Of course! We offer the NuCalm relaxation system to all of our patients. NuCalm is a safe and proven way to relax without the need for prescription medications or gases.
