What is sedation dentistry?

We understand dental work can cause anxiety. Sedation dentistry is the use of prescription medication to safely calm your nerves. To provide this service, our office holds a special permit from the state of Virginia and our team continues to pursue extensive training in a variety of sedation administration methods. We provide three levels of sedation in our office, from lightest to deepest:

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly referred to as laughing gas or sweet air, nitrous oxide is safest and provides the lightest level of sedation. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly and most people elect to drive themselves to and from their dental appointment if using nitrous oxide alone.

Light Sedation

Light sedation involves taking an oral sedative before your visit. You will remember the procedure and not be fully asleep. Most tell us they felt light sedation does a good job of ‘taking the edge off’ but it is not the same as being fully sedated. You will need to have an adult provide transportation to and from your appointment. We don’t provide this service for emergency visits.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation requires the use of multiple medications and multiple doses of medication. We will adjust the amount of medication as needed to achieve the required level of sedation. While you will not be fully asleep like surgery in the hospital, most tell us they do not remember  anything from the appointment and often feel like sleeping for most of the day after finishing at the office. Moderate sedation is the deepest level of sedation we offer. We don’t provide this service for emergency visits.

Are there other options?

We offer the NuCalm relaxation system to all of our patients. NuCalm is a safe and proven way to relax without the need for prescription medications or gases.
